CPU Mode

A player fighting a CPU in Lumines: Puzzle Fusion.

Vs. CPU Mode (informally known as Boss Battle) is a mode introduced in the first game of Lumines. Following the same rules as Vs. Mode, the player plays against ten A.I. (artificial intelligence) opponents (referred to as CPU's). Both the player and the CPU play on the same matrix, separated by a red/blue line. When one of the sides erases more squares as the Timeline reaches the end, the line pushes toward the opponent by one column. The Stage ends when one of the sides reaches the top.

Each CPU gets faster and more difficult to defeat for each Stage. Defeating a CPU clears the Stage and unlocks the Skin used for the Stage and the CPU's Avatar. Once all ten CPU's are defeated, a bonus Skin is awarded.

Trivia[]

  • Lumines Touch Fusion and Lumines Supernova are the only games without Vs. CPU Mode.
  • Sometimes, most CPU's rapidly stack their blocks, creating a "suicide".
  • In every game that features Vs. CPU Mode, Starman is always the last CPU.
  • CPU Avatars have a unique feature in that they are represented with colors. Unlocking them would simply give the player their monochromatic versions. Hacking is required if the player wants to play as the colorful versions.
  • Interestingly, when the player advances on, if either the player or the CPU attacks, the blocks will sometimes start to fall faster.
  • In Lumines: Puzzle Fusion and Lumines Plus, the game ends immediately when the player loses at any point. In all other games, after the player loses a Stage, they can choose to Retry the Stage.
    • In Lumines Remastered, when the player leaves for any reason, their progress will be saved at the Stage where they left off. There is also one Avatar that can be unlocked by completing this mode without using any Retries or leaving the game, i.e. defeating all 10 CPU's in a row.
  • In Lumines II and Lumines Live!, each CPU has its own special, animated background.
  • Since the release of Vs. CPU Mode, there was a popular rumor that these CPU's copy the same skills as the player uses. However, it was revealed to be false, since each CPU opponent has its own programmed A.I., which isn't supposed to copy or use the same tactics as the player does.
  • Vs. CPU Mode is a starter mode on every Lumines game that features it, except Live!.
